The Rebecca Lynn Cutler Legacy of Life Foundation was established in 2005 in celebration of the life of journalist Rebecca Lynn Cutler, after she lost her fight with depression and bipolar disorder at age 30. Rebecca’s family and friends wanted to continue Rebecca’s personal mission to help others receive the treatment and support that they need. Rebecca’s Dream has a natural partner in the Chicago-based national agency, the agency, the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA), a not-for-profit advocacy organization that relies largely on private contributions to fund the services it provides to more than 1,000 patient-directed support groups throughout the United States—and to the five million people who request and receive assistance from DBSA each year.

Together, the two entities hold an annual Gala, Rebecca’s Dream. Since its establishment in 2005, this event has raised over $1,000,000 and enabled us to reach over 15,000 people directly, as well as thousands more who have visited the Rebecca’s Dream websites. The benefit also honors an individual, who, in the public arena, has actively spoken out about depression or bipolar disorder—in order to educate, raise awareness, eliminate stigma, and foster compassionate understanding. The 2008 benefit honored Illinois’ now-Governor Pat Quinn with the Rebecca’s Dream Legacy of Life Award. Past honorees include Academy Award-winning actress Patty Duke and Congressman Patrick J. Kennedy of Rhode Island. The 2009 Legacy of Life Award was awarded to Paige Hemmis of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Paige Legacy of LifeIn honor of Paige Hemmis’s efforts to use her personal experience to shatter stigma, raise awareness, and educate the public about depression and bipolar disorder as real diseases, she received the 2009 Legacy of Life Award. The Rebecca Lynn Cutler Legacy of Life Foundation and DBSA were privileged to present her with this award at the 4th Annual Rebecca’s Dream Gala in Chicago on November 7, 2009.
